Club Night Profile
SKINT
FATBOY SLIM, MIDFIELD GENERAL (DAMIEN HARRIS)
OCTOBER 2nd 1998
Fatboy Slim : My overriding memories of playing at The End were when I was first courting Zoe [Ball]. This was around the time she was presenting Live And Kicking and she was sat next to me in the DJ booth knowing that she was going to be on telly in five hours ’ time! And for me personally, it felt like the superstar DJ thing was beckoning. This was a fantastic moment in time for the whole Skint Records label. When we started it was like ‘is there a queue? ’ and then we went from that to a roadblock. At that point we knew it wasn ’t just a Brighton thing. I do love The End. It ’s got a fantastic DJ booth - I love playing in the round - and
the soundsystem used to make my chest vibrate! I also remember hiding in the big freezer in the dressing room once. Sorry!
Liam O ’Hare (The End's Operations Manager): None of us realised how big this night was going to be. I can ’t tell you how much we paid Norman - you ’d have to stick a few noughts on the end to book him now! His DJing and interaction with the crowd was amazing, engaging with the clubbers and getting them involved, like a football match. He pulled out his platters and waved them around as if to say ‘This is going to be a blinder ’.He completely took control- Erol from Trash was there and was totally inspired by it. It was a very exciting time to be in London - the economy was booming, dance music was massive and Norman was in the Top Ten.
