Thomas Schumacher - Secret Berlin
Ping pong, pools and parks in the German capital.
Dr. Pong
Eberswalder Str. 21, Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin
www.drpong.net
I first read about Dr. Pong in a blog about clubbing and gaming here in Berlin. As the name suggests, at Dr. Pong you can play Ping Pong while drinking and dancing. Since there is only one table you have to knock everyone else out if you want to have a game. The music is eclectic, from italo disco to nu rave, the sound system is tiny, as is the bar. A beer costs around 2 euros and for a 5 euros deposit you can borrow a Ping-Pong paddle. The more competitive should be warned, there are always semi pros hanging out at Dr. Pong waiting for their moment to shine. The crowd at Dr. Pong is very mixed, generally around 20-25, with some tourists mixing in with Berliners. The vibe is boisterous and relaxed with the kind of alcohol consumption Germans are known for.
Volkspark Friedrichshain
Prenzlauer Berg / Friedrichshain
Right in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg lies this beautiful park. There are many playgrounds for the little ones and a track for joggers and rollerbladers, as well as a good restaurant that serves tasty food.
Konnopkes Imbiss
Schoenhauser Allee 44a, Prenzlauer Berg
Unless you are a vegetarian, you have to sample a traditional Berlin currywurst (sausage) while here. Konnopkes is an institution. It has been around for decades and they still serve the best sausage in town. Berliner Pilsner is a good companion to this beautiful snack.
Stadtbad Mitte
Gartenstr. 5, Mitte, Berlin
My favourite indoor pool in town, built in the 1920s, with the walls and the ceiling made up of over a thousand glass windows. Also, there is a sauna for those who like to sweat.
Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
Cora-Berliner Str. 1, Mitte, Berlin
www.holocaust-mahnmal.de
A must for everyone who comes to Berlin.
