Marc Romboy - Secret Mönchengladbach

Marc Romboy tells us about Mönchengladbach, one of western Germany's most interesting cities.

You might not know Mönchengladbach, although you may have heard about my hometown if you are a soccer fan. I will never forget the Champions League Final of 1977 when my team Borussia Mönchengladbach lost against Liverpool FC 3-1. One of the worst days of my life, haha. Mönchengladbach is located in the western part of Germany, in between the Dutch, Belgian border and Dusseldorf, Cologne. It’s a nice place and these are my favourite spots...

Moshi Bar
Krichelstr. 22, 41061 Mönchengladbach, Germany
www.moshibar.de

The greatest sushi bar in town, filled with nice people and serving perfect food made by Vin; the boss of the kitchen. The amount of tables is quite limited but you can share your table with other people and as such the chance to get to know people is quite high. You don’t get sushi only. You can also order the finest Thai food and curry dishes followed by the great green tea ice cream plate.

Bar Plastique

After dinner this bar is a must. Very polite bartenders, cool and exotic drinks and laid back jazz sounds make for a perfect night. The special red plastic lamps in a 60s retro style give this location a unique look you may not have seen before.

Die Nacht
Waldhausener Str. 25, 41061 Mönchengladbach, Germany

‘Die Nacht’ simply means ‘the night’ in English and is one of the best clubs in Germany. This venue still does not work with advertising and only the insiders know about it. The reason is simple as only 130 to 140 people fit in this wonderful club. I always celebrate my birthday there and lots of well known friends like Tommie Sunshine, Martin Landsky, Loco Dice and Tocadisco have already spun their discs there. If you already know all the best venues in Berlin, finding hidden places with great parties is a really good alternative.

Schloss Rheydt
Schlossstr. 508, 41238 Mönchengladbach, Germany
http://www.museum-schloss-rheydt.de/

This has nothing to do with nightlife as this is one of the best known castles in our area of Western Germany. It’s a wonderful castle, most likely built in the twelfth century, including a very good museum where you can learn a lot about the good old Roman times. But this museum also offers modern exhibitions like ‘From gramophone to mp3’ or ‘The Beatles’. Maybe the best thing is that there is a nice restaurant inside called Vita. It has a great outdoor chill out area and one of the best fresh pizzas around.

Museum Abteiberg
Abteistr. 20, 41061 Mönchengladbach, Germany
http://www.museumabteiberg.de/

This museum is one of the most important ones in Germany for Modern Art, Dadaism and Pop Art. Founded in 1982, I always visit this place from year to year, looking for new and abstract art. Great works from people like Joseph Beuys or Andy Warhol are shown there and from time to time you can also visit tiny little drum & bass parties on a Thursday.
