Bushwacka! on 'Feels Closer' and Olmeto Records

We chat to one half of Layo & Bushwacka!

Matthew 'Bushwacka' B chatted to Endclub.com in March '06 about Layo and Bushwacka!'s third album 'Feels Closer', and about their new record label Olmeto Records.

Endclub.com: Musically, how would you describe 'Feels Closer'?

Bushwacka!: Musically I'd say the album is a fusion of electronic sounds and acoustic music. Anyone that has listened to our previous albums will know that this has become our trademark sound.

Being a classically trained musician yourself was it your idea to use live musicians on this album?

No, it was both our ideas. It has been a two way street. Over the years Layo has introduced me to different genres of music, like psychedelic punk and rock that he used to listen to when he was younger that I didn't have a clue about and likewise I have introduced him to classical music. I'd say both our tastes have progressed over the years.

Were there any musicians that you approached that couldn't be on the album?

We recorded this album in New York and used the session musicians available to us at the time, but the collaborations that are on the album were very much a mutual decision.

Who decided upon the remixes you've comissioned - and what is your favourite remix from the album so far?

That's a really difficult question to answer, as I like them all....Green Velvet, Loco Dice - maybe Loco Dice.

Are you and Layo taking this album on tour, if yes where are you looking forward to visiting?

I'm really looking forward to taking this album on tour. We're gonna do Europe first, then in the summer we plan to hit North and South America. Although, the night I'm most looking forward to is the album launch party at The End. I'm excited about that party, it's gonna be good. I love Brazil, but the place I most look forward to visiting is probably Ibiza. There's nothing to dislike about the place. There's probably not a day that goes by where I don't think about Ibiza.

Why did you both decide to set up Olmeto Records and will you be signing any new talent?

We set up Olmeto Records purely for ourselves. We wanted our own label to have creative control over our own material. Of course we'll be putting out remixes by different artists, but no, we won't be signing any new talent.
