Milton Jackson - Secret Glasgow

Freerange’s Milton Jackson shares his favourite Glasgow haunts…

Jamaica Street

Jamaica Street is an odd one. Upon it resides the Weegie branch of Sound Control, some nice hi-fi stores, the ubiquitous Sub Club and nice old style boozer MacSorley's. All pleasant places to go for people inclined to spend their time drinking/clubbing/buying audio equipment (that's me then!). However there's a dark side to this street, in that it's generally inhabited day and night by complete headcase junkies and Buckfast swilling teenagers. A nice lesson in 21st century UK social disintegration!

Bath Street

I enjoy this street for the Monday nights - quiet pint action after DJing at the weekend. Places like Moskito and Over The Road…I’ve been drinking in these pubs for years. Just don't sit on The Bench in Moskito - it's ours!

Where The Monkey Sleeps, West Regent Street

Absolutely class place for food, I enjoy the Stoofa (roast chicken breast panini with sage, thyme, balsamic vinegar and lemon juice). Great for popping in if you're doing a bit of shopping and need a respite from Glaswegian bams drinking aforementioned Buckfast Tonic Wine.

The Goat / Firebird, Argyle Street

Heading west from the city centre we get this nice double team of pubs - the food in Firebird is especially nice. There is also a quaint little cobbled street in the West End called Ashton Lane, that has unfortunately lost 85% of its former charm over the years due to some egregious commercialisation - so I kind of think of The Goat and Firebird as taking the mantle from Ashton Lane.

Mother India, Westminster Terrace

Ahhhhhhhhh…after a few beers in McPhabbs or The Observatory (or both) you can shimmy on down here (a short walk is all it takes) and indulge in some of the finest Indian cuisine known to man. In fact, Glasgow has loads of great Indian restaurants to choose from, but this is one of the best.
