Phil York - Secret Edinburgh
Tranzlation’s Phil York fills us in on his five fave hangouts in the beautiful Scottish capital.
Joey D’s
54 Broughton Street, Edinburgh, EH1 3SA
www.joey-d.co.uk
For those of you like myself who have a huge carbon footprint and would like to try and give something back to the environment, check out Joey D’s clothes shop on Broughton Street. Famous for the reconstruction of old clothing from splinters of the past into totally individual one-off, cutting edge fashion items. You will simply not find any of these items anywhere else. Highly recommended!
Vittoria
113 Brunswick Street, Edinburgh, EH7 5HR
www.vittoriarestaurant.com
If Italian food floats your boat, try the long-standing Vittoria restaurant on Leith Walk, which has been there since the 70s. This is the perfect Italian; authentic food, great atmosphere and always a bit of banter with the waiters! Ask for Tony, I swear he gets bigger every time I go down there, which must be a good sign, and if you’re not down with all the pizza and pasta then try the sirloin steak a la Diana.
Club Ego
Picardy Place, Edinburgh
www.clubego.co.uk
Located on the east end opposite the playhouse and the huge Omni Centre, Ego is the finest underground venue the city has to offer. It has a refurbished casino with a huge main hall and high ceilings; still featuring floor to ceiling oil paintings as well as a huge fish tank located in the downstairs’ more relaxed Cocteau Lounge. Home to Edinburgh’s infamous night Nuklearpuppy bringing world class DJs on rotation each month to the capital.
Peckham's
155/159 Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh EH10 4DG
www.peckhams.co.uk
Simply the finest delicatessen in Edinburgh, hands down. It’s open from early morning till after midnight and if you like the finer things in life when it comes to food and beverages then this is the place for you. It also features a bistro style restaurant located underneath the main shop. Plus it’s the only place in Edinburgh which sells alcohol to take out from 10pm till midnight which always comes in handy!
Sandwich Filling Station
33- 39 South Clerk St, Edinburgh
Don’t be fooled by its title, this slice of paradise is laden with a multitude of different chocolates, cakes and sweets, literally chocoholic heaven. Highly recommended are the Oreo and Malteser cakes! They do also sell sandwiches but good luck finding them under all this chocolate, and believe me once you step in there, you won’t care for anything relating to bread.
Indigo Yard
7 Charlotte Lane, Edinburgh, EH2 4QZ
www.indigoyardedinburgh.co.uk
Tucked away down a back street in the busy west end, this is one of the finest drinking establishments the city has to offer, with a relaxed candlelit atmosphere providing the perfect setting for the start of your night out. Try the Mohitos, they have fuelled the start to many a messy night for me in the past!
