Tim Deluxe interviews Darren Emerson

The partners in crime chatted about their upcoming party at The End

Darren Emerson, international record spinner and founder of the megawatt Underwater label and night at The End, sat down with Tim Deluxe, ahead of the Underwater 50th Release Christmas party on December 18th 2004. The two discussed what was on in their world, past, present and future, plus what they were planning to play at the party.

Tim Deluxe: How are you today?

Darren Emerson: I'm very well thank you!

What have you been up to recently?

Last week I went to a bit of a party and got very hungover, last weekend I chilled out for once, not travelling around playing records.

What have you had the chance to do while chilling out?

I'm reading the autobiography of Anthony Kiedis' - from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers - and it's very interesting - a good read. And I took my little girl to see The Incredibles and loved it, it's fantastic.

So when you're not at home, and you're travelling, what do you miss most?

My bed and my home comforts like roast dinners.

You'll be off again soon though, where you most looking forward to going in 2005?

Looking forward to going to Australia and be on Bondi with you Timmy and then I'm just gonna travel about a bit and chill and get ready for my live gigs and shows next year with my album.

On the subject of new releases, the Underwater 50th release party is coming up on Dec 18th. What do you think when you look back on all that the club has achieved?

I've always loved The End and have played there for years. I don't know what I expected when I started the residency but I hoped it would be a club that I could really build something and play around with my sound. That's what it's been great for, the crowd at Underwater really let me do my thing - I play a bit of everything and they love it. It will always hold a special place in my heart!

What's your maddest memory of the club?

They're all crazy... probably something that involves you...!

And your favourite guests?

DE: You obviously! I do love our back to back sets to be honest, the 18th's gonna be great! Jon Carter's always great and Josh Wink is bloody great too.

Can you give us a preview of what you'll be playing on the night?

Yeah all stuff from my album! I'm also playing a bit of electro-y stuff at the moment.... and techy stuff and some housey stuff...! Think I might actually dig out some of the classics on the 18th too.

Yeah I might play some old rave.

Yeah let's do it!

On the subject of old stuff, what have been your major musical influences?

Joy Division, Plaid, Black Dog, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye, Pnau, Prince, ESG, Talking Heads, Ulrich Schnauss, Ian Brown...

With all these influences and all the different types of music that you play, how do you plan each set?

I don't plan a set, I'm like a bull in a china shop, anything goes!

Anything? Even requests? Tell us the worst request you've ever had for a record.

Kylie Minogue - I played it as well, it was a joke for a mate. Oh and someone once asked me to play Madonna but she can piss off :)
