FreQ Nasty interview

He talks spirtuality, musical endeavours and extreme sports...

FreQ Nasty, everybody's favourite breaks DJ and producer, dropped by recently to for a chat with Endclub.com before heading up a bumper edition of Chew The Fat in Oct '05. A multi-talented guy with seminal releases, ace albums and an DJ intinerary that takes him across the world, Nasty's an all-round stylish dude with more humour than most. Read on...

Endclub.com: You were born in Fiji and grew up in New Zealand, two of the most beautiful places in the world. What was the best thing about your childhood and how has your upbringing influenced you?

FreQ Nasty: Being able to wander about in bare feet with your mates surrounded by beaches, islands and forest without having to worry about crime, pollution or tube strikes was absolutely fuckin' superb. I guess it has given me an almost subconscious ability to repress the need to hurt the driver of the 133 bus when he pulls off the stop as I'm running to catch it...which most English people don't seem to have.

You've long been a devotee of Akia Zen. Can you tell us more about your faith?

It's the ancient Japanese art of recreating the universe within the mind in everyday life through the manipulation of internalised sound frequencies.

Before DJing you played in bands. What instrument did you play and what was the highlight of your band career?

I played drums and guitar and culminated in playing 'You Gotta fight For Your Right To Party' dressed up as Frankenfurter from the Rocky Horror Picture Show at school assembly... I really wasn't sure if embarking on a career in the music was a good idea after that. Such heady heights so early on...

As a globally acclaimed DJ with amazing dreads 'n' threads, you're a larger than life character to many. What are the advantages and disadvantages of being in this position?

Upsides: Having the most awesome Airline sick bag collection EVER!

Downsides: Girls just talk to my hair and don't respect me for who I am, and that really hurts.

You're famous for a DJing style which transcends genres. What are the key records which exemplify this for you?

Village People 'YMCA' 2005 remix feat Beanieman and Sizzla, and Neil Sedaka's 'Oh Carol' covered by Plastikman. Killer tunes if you can find 'em.

Tell us about your current studio projects.

I'm building a mini kitchen into my present studio which, once the toasted sandwich maker is installed, is really going to give the whole thing a more comfortable homely feel. It should greatly enhance my ability to tear the arse out of big club dance floors on the weekends especially when the magnolia walls go burnt sienna and the Bourba wool carpet comes in on Monday. Can't wait!

You've played at Chew The Fat! before. What makes you come back to the club?

I guess having Paul Arnold dressed up as a geisha serving light refreshments backstage all night is a real bonus and it really shows in the DJs' performance across the night . Arigato gozaimasu Paul-san!

What's your personal mantra and what's the best piece of advice you can think of to give to others?

My personal mantra is "mother does love you she was just busy" and the best piece of advice I would give to others is "don't lock your kids in the cupboard, get a nanny."

When was the last time you lost anything, including your mind or your temper?

I lost my mind, my virginity and my self respect, pretty much in that order...... only the other day.

Tell us something about you that we don't know.

I lost the final of the UK amateur nude tiddlywinks title in 2003/2004 to a virtual unknown.
