Merka talks to endclub.com

On 'Beserka', breaks, and pre-licked biscuits

Following the release of his debut album 'Beserka' on Paul Arnold's Fat! Records, Merka wowed the crowds at Chew The Fat! in March '07 at his album launch with a storming Dex n FX set. He found time to have a chat with us about his album, his life as a DJ and getting 'merked'!

Endclub.com: Your debut album 'Beserka' is out now; tell us all about it in twelve words or less.

Merka: I'm even more proud of it than my mum.

What's the best thing about the life of a DJ?

Being behind the wheel of a journey where you can take everyone in the room where ever you want to go, filling the air with the atmosphere you want.

Tell us about a typical day in the life of Merka?

The perfect day is being left alone in my studio through to the small hours, a typical day is trying to make this happen.

What effect did growing up in a village in Somerset have on you musically?

It left me with a lot of time to think and create, I was always playing with music or building and painting things.

Has anyone ever 'merked' you in a 'Rio's World Cup Wind-ups' type fashion?

In eating pre-licked biscuits and drinking bong water thanks to my 'best' friend K-deemo, I'd consider myself 'merked'.

Were you disappointed not to have been nominated at the Breakspoll awards?

Not at all, I got to play at the event which was more of a reward to me, and there's always next year.

What are your thoughts on the current breaks scene?

On the surface I fear it's a bit stale but I think it's only really getting started and will really begin drawing from other sounds and scenes, new and old. Growing parties and exposure should lead to a wave of new producers moving into breaks and bring fresh sounds and ideas I cant wait to hear.

Your radio show on Breaks FM is called 'The Reacharound' - can you tell us your inspiration for the name?!

Mike Lennon is my inspiration, he cracks me up 24/7 and we thought it would lend to a laugh.

Does the fact that you are responsible for the first artist album to be released on Fat! Records hold any special significance for you?

Huge, I can honestly say I'm honoured. Paul Arnold's Certificate 18 Label was a massive influence for me growing up and has put out some of my favourite albums, so to have him and his label crew behind me believing in what I do is very special.

Where do you see yourself, artistically or otherwise, twenty years from now?

With a massive studio in a barn in the country right next to the manor where all my friends live with me.
