Mylo Inteview by Bugged Out
Johnno interviews everyone's favourite sample-botherer.
After the storming success of his performance at Bugged Out!'s 10th birthday, Bugged Out! invited Mylo back again for the 11th Birthday in October '05. Johnno pinned him down for their annual birthday interview.
Bugged Out!: We're nearing the end of what must have been a crazy year for you. What have been the highlights?
Mylo: Let me think. We did a festival tour in Australia in February which was good and I went to see my sister in the furthest corner of Cambodia on the way home which was amazing. Miami was comme ci comme ca but I did get to throw Puff Daddy off the decks at the Revolver party which was nice. DJing with Basti (Tief)Schwarz in Montreal on the way home was a good night. Skolbeats in Brazil. Getting my brother to join the band on drums. Playing to a sold-out Glasgow Barrowlands on my birthday (I nearly hurled!). Cigale in Paris and the after-party at the infamous Baron. The Skye Music Festival. Glastonbury esp. getting all fixed up by a ginger midget C3PO on K (K3PO?). The Glastonbury reunion / mushroom illegalisation party at the Lock Tavern. Gig in an ancient naval fortress off the coast of St. Petersberg. Lovebox. Fuji Rocks. Benecassim. Cannes. Reading. TDK. DJing for Bugged Out in Ibiza, Rock'n'Coke, Istanbul. Getting arrested by the British Transport Police after having my slumber on the floor of the Eurostar mistaken for a heroin overdose. Erol's wedding.
Are there any more singles to come from the Mylo album?
The plan was to release 'Muscle Cars' as the last single about now, but that was before the surprising and humiliating success of that bootleg, so now we're holding 'Muscle Cars' back until the new year. We've had the mixes in for a wee while now and they're amazing but we're keeping a lid on it. They're by Tiga, Justus Kohncke, DJ T and Alex Smoke.
Has anyone else sent you any bootlegs after the success of 'Doctor Pressure'?
Literally billions. They are all dispiritingly awful. The worst is 'Drop The Pressure' versus 'Bad' by Michael Jackson. I think it's six semi-tones out of key which is as out of key as you can possibly get.
How about 'In Your Arms' crossed with Scooter's 'Move Your Ass'? It could be called 'In Your Ass Baby Yeah'.
Funny you should mention that because the reason I like 'In Your Arms' - and the factor that eventually tipped the scales in favour of it going on the album at all - is that it sounds like it goes "In your ass baby yeah".
Have you started work on any new material yet? Last time it was all done on a laptop, how are you approaching recording now?
Lots of crap wee demos done on planes, tour buses etc. And I have 114 unreleased demos from before. However I don't know if I'll do another album, I don't like repeating myself.
How's the tour been since you got your brother in on drums? Are you thinking of getting your Mam in on the triangle?
It's been grand. He's an unconscionably hairy little rotter with an extraordinarily volatile temperament but he's got me out of a scrape or two, to put it mildly, and his drumming is tighter than a gnat's whatnot. My mum would join but she has a gig playing the organ every Sunday morning in church in the Isle of Skye so it is hard logistically. Apparently the Mystery Jets have got the lead singer's Dad on guitar, which is cool... also my mate Colin from Southampton used to make records with his mum as Surreal Madrid.
Have you seen Elton recently? (Or do you call him 'Elt' thesedays?)
I call him Papa Reginald. No, I have not seen him since last Christmas. We are both terrible at keeping in touch. We'll hopefully catch up at his wedding. I'm taking Keira Knightley.
You've become a jolly good DJ of late. We enjoyed your set for us in Brum. What have you been buying recently?
I am liking anything by Sweet Light, John Starlight, Justice, Sebastien, Alan Braxe, Trentemoller and anything to do with Kitsune and Get Physical. I buy lots of records in Phonica (Poland St, London) that I don't play very much, and play lots of things I get sent, alongside my own preposterous re-edits of various party perennials and general crimes against taste.
Are you looking forward to this forthcoming weekend of Bugged Out gigs? Manchester and London? Anything special planned?
Yes. Manchester and London. Couldn't be more honoured to be doing the Bugged Out birthday party for the second year in a row. But I'm suffering "burn out" according to the tabloids and it comes immediately before our last blowout concert tour (featuring none other than Hot Chip and Whomadewho as well as our designated tour DJs the Filthy Dukes) so I am going to do my level best to keep it locked down. I'm going to play the new Kate Bush double album in its entirety. Wearing a red leotard.
