Unabombers talk about their NYE set here

We chat to the Electric Chair residents before their NYE set

The Unabombers are Luke Cowdrey and Justin Crawford. As residents and promoters of the Electric Chair the reputation of the Unabombers has grown hand in hand with the success of the club, which the pair started together in 1995. Their sets are characterised by a flow through genres with everything from house, disco, hip-hop, broken beat, Latin, soul, r&b and techno thrown into the pot. Making the links between quality music with a rich vein of funk and soul, their anything goes style has earned them a flawless reputation and a huge following worldwide. With their debut album under the moniker Elektrons on the horizon, and an all night set on New Years Eve '06 at AKA to look forward to, we caught up with Luke for a chat...

Endclub.com: Hi Luke, first up, are you looking forward to New Years Eve? Any great New Years memories you'd like to share?

Unabombers: Yes we're looking forward to NYE bringing 8 hours of music across the board - a good ol' proper journey. This is a chance one rarely gets in playing such a long set. The only thing I know about 2006 was to discover that when you book into a bed and breakfast you actually are allowed to stay there in the daytime. That was the largest event for Luke in 2006.

You're currently gearing up for the release of your debut album as Elektrons, what made you take the decision now, after ten years of DJing and promoting together, to work on an album together?

It took us 7 years to get the first compilation released. We're not into fast tracking things. Osmosis, i.e. slowly developing, has always been our philosophy. It's very exciting right now, we've reached the point to release our first artist based album; having soaked up all our influences, loves and experiences over the last decade.

What are your individual roles in the studio, and how do you both like to work?

Me and Justin are ying and yang and always have been. Justin and myself have always had this at the root of our relationship since day one. It's the same in the studio.

Many people will have heard the incredible 'Get Up' album sampler, but for those who haven't, what kind of sounds and styles can they expect to hear on the LP?

It's a hard one to put a tag on. It's a broad range of sounds. The album is a reflection of music we love, from electronic, future soul, great hip hop through to warm spiritual house music to technoid disco oddities. Everything we love across the board.

The album features vocals from the likes of Jurassic 5, Eska and Mpho Skeef, what were they like to work with - and how do the vocal tracks fit in to the album as a whole?

All of them were an absolute pleasure to work with. No prima donnas and we all gelled fantastically. The tracks were built around them and we couldn't have hoped for them to Vocally we are very excited with what we've done to those tracks. The instrumentals were completely across the board.

You're going to be seeing in 2007 with us this year, are there any acts you are tipping for big things next year?

Small Arms Fire, Lay Sovereign, Pete Simpson.

What are your New Years Resolutions?

Detox to retox...

And finally, what's your favourite track to drop at midnight on NYE?

Andy Williams, 'Can't Get Used To Losing You'.
