Commix - Secret Cambridge

The duo talk us through the best places to visit in their hometown

Botanical Gardens
Cory Lodge, Bateman Street
+44 (0)1223 336265

We've both spent plenty of sunny days here as kids and its a place you will never forget. Its the University's show gardens basically, if your interested they contain every plant and environment you could imagine from jungles to deserts. Great! If not it's a perfect spot for a quiet picnic in the sun.

There's a real Alice in Wonderland vibe to it with perfectly shaped trees and lawns, a massive water fountain/wishing well in the middle and stepping stones over the pond. There's even some novelty ducks! Inside they have everything from banana trees to Venus Flytraps. Absolutely love this place [when the weather's right].

Granchester Meadows / Red Lion Pub
33 High Street, Grantchester,Cambridgeshire
01223 840121

We tend to take a few trips here each year. The best way is by punt. Get some beers and that, and spend a couple of hours getting drunk and trying not to fall in!

Once in Granchester [home to shady politician and part-time novelist Geoffery Archer] we generally moor up and walk to the pub. I swear they have the best pubs in the world up there. Great food and gardens looking over the river. The Pink Floyd boys used to hang out here. It's where they took the photos for their 4th LP during the 70s and they liked it so much they even wrote a song about it!

There's not a great deal going on in Cambridge by way of nice threads but this little shop always pulls through. They stock amongst others, local brand 'Supreme Being' who are situated just outside the city and a label called 'Dephekt' which does some wicked stuff. There's your usual dunnys etc. and the walls are covered with local artists originals including young talent 'Penfold' who also does the flyers for our party. It's not the easiest place to find but when you do you'll love it!

The Fez Club
Market Passage, 15 Sidney Street, Cambridge

Much like the threads there isn't much choice by way of clubs in 'the bridge', on the most part they are carpeted meat-markets which you can't get into unless your wearing shiny shoes and a pink shirt. The Fez Club is the exception. There's always a nice vibe in there and it's got a really intimate atmosphere. Cheap cold beers, a wicked sound system and right in the middle of town made this the only choice for our monthly night 'Spoonfed' which we do on the first Thursday of every month.

Pickerel Inn
30 Magdalene Street, Cambridge
01223355068

This is the oldest pub in town which dates back to the 15th century and is situated next to the first ever bridge over the river so effectively the Cam-bridge! In its time it has served as a Gin Palace, an Opium Den and a Brothel so it has a rather mysterious feel to it!

It's the HQ for various Cambridge drinking societies, so from time to time you get to see the initiation ceremonies and yard of ale downing competitions which are always fun to watch, if a little disgusting! It has a really cosy vibe in the winter months with big open fires, low ceilings and nicely tucked away tables etc. and in the summer it has a lovely garden with plenty of room to lounge around!

I don't work for them, don't worry, but would certainly recommend The Soul Tree in Cambridge. There's a mixed selection of music, but they have had some greats play there such as Dave Angel, Derrick May, Josh Wink and Carl Craig. It's a nice venue with a nice vibe. Certainly worth a look if you're in Cambridge.
