Holy Hail's Secret New York
Cat and Alex from the band show us their bite of the Big Apple.
Iheart
262 Mott Street
Holy Hail hearts Iheart. Aside from the fact that the owner is a hottie and good friend of the band, the store happens to have a wide collection of clothing, jewellery and artwork made by some of the hippest designers (new and old) from around the globe. Carrying designs by Cacherel, Tsubi, Perks and Mini, local designer favourites Obesity & Speed, Sunshine & Shadow, Samantha Pleet, Wowch and Surface 2 Air to name a few, Iheart is a one stop shop to get your hands on something cool for every season. And the in-store parties always lead to
El Sombrero
Corner of Stanton Street and Ludlow
Let me just start by saying that although El Sombrero is a summertime staple for most New Yorkers, it is NOT the food that you go for. I suppose the buckets of salsa that you can slop up when you eat inside are palatable enough... but the real reason anyone ever hits this spot is for the margaritas. If you ask really nicely, you may even be able to score a takeaway cup and enjoy your beverage while taking a stroll through the East Village/LES. Made with a special in-house tequila brew, you just need one of these trademark Margs to send you off into summertime bliss.
Gimmie Gimmie
Amazing record shop - 5th St bw 1st Ave and 2nd Ave.
The guy that runs it spends all his time going out to remote locations, digging for hidden treasures. He then sells them back to you at a slightly inflated rate - but the gems he finds makes it well worth it! There literally is no genre he doesn't touch upon. It's dangerous to go in there.
Punjabi
Cheap good eats, on 1st St bw Ave A and 1st Ave.
It's vegetarian Indian food, all run by Sikhs. $3 for a small rice with two vegetables... coffee with cardamom, roti with veggies for $3.50. Also, it's open 24 hours! It's tiny in there, and they're always blasting Bangra pop music of some kind... always full of taxi drivers, travellers, and late night drunken revellers.
