Soil & “Pimp” Sessions is one of contemporary jazz music’s most exciting acts. A six piece band from Japan, Soil & “Pimp” burst onto the scene in 2003 with their exhilarating live show and have spent the years since winning over an international army of fans, from jazz purists to hip hop heads. In 2005 they signed to Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings in the UK, and in 2008 release their third album on his imprint. We tracked down “the agitator” Shacho for an interview. Below, we have the interview both in Japanese and English…

Endclub.com: 君たちが“Death Jazz”と呼ぶものについて、それはどんな音で、君達をどんな気持ちにさせてくれるものなのか説明してもらえますか？
Endclub.com: Can you describe how your so-called “death jazz” sounds and how it makes you feel?

Shacho: ステージの上でテクニックを披露しあうJAZZではなく、会場の空
気を一つにし、そして熱い空気を作る事が出来る、より激しい
JAZZです。ヘビーメタルやハードロックのライブとなんら変わりありません。オーディエンスは自然と体を揺らし、大声でシャウトしています。そうやってオーディエンスと共に作り上げるライブは、最高に気持ちいい瞬間です。
Shacho: “Death Jazz” is very intense jazz which can unite an entire audience; it’s about getting the place hot rather than just showing each musician’s technique. It’s similar to heavy metal / hard rock gigs. Audiences spontaneously shake their bodies and shout loudly; when the show is not just created by us but by the power of audience is when we feel the greatest sensations.

君達の音楽について「セックス・ピストルズがサックスやピアノを演奏していたらきっとこんな音だっただろう」と書かれているのを読んだことがありますが、それは的を得ていると思いますか？
I once read a description of your music as what the Sex Pistols would sound like if they played saxophone and piano, do you think that’s accurate?

それを読んだときは、僕らも最高にうれしかった。彼らは最高に激しい
音を作り続けてたからね。JAZZのアーティストではなく、
punkのアーティストに形容されることは嬉しいし、的を得ていると思う。
When we read this description we were so happy because The Sex Pistols created the some of the most intense music. We are very glad that people compare us to punk bands rather than jazz artists as we think it’s more accurate.

JAZZ（一般的なJAZZ）は、2008年の音楽シーンにおいて、どんな位置にあると思いますか？
How do you think jazz as a whole fits into the musical landscape in 2008?

JAZZは常に進化し続けていると思います。そして世界中あらゆる国から
新しい音がリリースされ続けています。現在の音楽シーンにおいて、
JAZZそのものは決してメジャーな音楽ではないが、他のあらゆるジャン
ルに影響を与え続けていると思います。
I think jazz goes on evolving all the time. New jazz sounds keeps on coming from countries all over the world. I admit jazz isn’t major, mainstream music, but it continues to influence other music genres.

君達は、生粋のジャズ・ファンから喝采されリスペクトされるのと、
君達のライヴに惹かれるトレンドに敏感な若い観客の支持を受けるのと
どちらにより興味がありますか？
Are you more interested in receiving acclaim and respect from jazz purists, or from the younger crowds you usually attract at your gigs?

トレンドに敏感な若い観客からは、ライブで沢山のエネルギーをぶつけ合う事ができるし、ジャンルを超えて音楽を聞いている人々からは、沢山の刺激を受けます。 長年、伝統的な古いJAZZを聞き続けて来た人達に、僕らの音を評価してもらえるってのも嬉しいですね。
We exchange tons of energy with trendy, young crowds; people who listen to various music genres help inspire us. Having said that, we are also very glad that jazz fans who have listened to authentic, traditional jazz music for a long time also appreciate what we do.

東京のクラブのクオリティの高さは世界中ですばらしく評判が良いのですが、なにが東京のクラブシーンをそんなに特別なものにしていると思いますか？
Tokyo has a fantastic reputation worldwide for the quality of its clubs, what do you think it is that makes it so special?

日本人の国民性だと思います。元来日本人は、海外の文化を輸入し、自分たちなりに消化、理解をした上で、新しい日本の文化として発信することが得意な民族です。自動車や時計やピアノがそうであるように。そして東京は世界中の情報が集まる街です。その情報を取捨選択し、その情報をお手本にしてよりクオリティーの高いクラブを目指しているんです。オーディエンスは同じようによりクオリティーの高い音楽を求める。それが世界中のDJに評価されることでより磨きがかかっているのではないでしょうか。
I think it comes from the national characteristics of the Japanese. Japanese people are good at importing foreign culture, then digesting and understanding them at a deep level, adding our own flavour and turning them out as new Japanese culture. Like with cars, watches and pianos for example. Tokyo is also a town where information from all over the world combines. With clubs, as with everything, we select the best from all the information we get, take them as a model and aim for creating clubs in higher quality. Besides, the Japanese audience always seek high quality music. DJs around the world evaluate the Japanese club scene and that helps improve the scene further.

東京に行く人に、どこを訪れ、何を見ることをお薦めしますか？
If someone was going to Tokyo, where would you recommend that they visit?

秋葉原、築地のフィッシュマーケット、渋谷、原宿、浅草は定番です ね。もし時間があれば、
Akihabara, the Fish Market in Tsukiji, Shibuya, Harajuku and Asakusa are the
places all tourists should visit if they have the time.

世界中で一番好きなクラブはどこですか？（註：ライヴを行う場として一番好きなところという意味で聞いてます）
Which are your favourite clubs to play at worldwide?

西麻布のYellowは大好きです。バンドを結成して間もない頃からずっとライブをしてきました。残念ながら6月末で閉店してしまいます。
I love Yellow in Nishi-Azabu, Tokyo. We have played there a lot from the very beginning; soon after we formed the band. Unfortunately it will be closing at the end of June.

ベーシストのOmer Avital名義のアルバムもカッコいいです。
The new album by Third World Love is fantastic! It’s a four piece group from Israel.
Avishai Cohen plays on this album. An album made by the bass player of this band under the name Omer Avital is also very cool.
