DJ Marky interview

We talk to Marky ahead of his last ever set at The End

Endclub.com: Friday is your last ever DJ set at The End – how are you feeling about it?

DJ Marky: To be honest I feel really sad. The End was one of the first clubs I ever got to play at when I came to the UK, and I loved it from the minute I arrived. The vibe is always nice, especially for London, so this club will always have a special place in my heart.

You regularly play all night sets in Brazil, and that inspired the all-nighters here at DJ Marky & Friends. How do sets here compare to those in Brazil?
I guess in Brazil I have a bit more freedom to play different kinds of music when I play all nights. I can play a bit of funk and soul, and maybe some reggae, but when I play all night in the main room at The End, it is all about the D&B beats from start to finish. It’s not better or worse than Brazil – just different.

Tell us some of your favourite memories from your time at The End.
I’ve had some amazing nights. Playing back to back with Zinc was amazing, probably one of the best nights we have had musically. Then playing with guys like Gilles Peterson, Laurent Garnier, and the all night job with Fabio will always stay in my memory. Jumping from one room to the other for an eight hour musical throwdown was quality!

What are the tunes that you associate with The End?
Probably my tune ‘LK’ with XRS will remind me of the place, but in all fairness I’ve dropped so many tunes in the DJ booth it would be hard to pick one. What reminds me of The End will always be the vibes I think.

Who are the other guests that you’ve really enjoyed having along?
Well the night is called DJ Marky & Friends so I have always had someone I respect and get on with in the booth with me. It was great to have Random Movement over from America, and my good friend Makoto from Japan. Laurent Garnier always puts on a good show as well – we have played together a lot around the world, it always works well.

How did you enjoy The End’s party at Springeight in Austria earlier this year?
Awesome! The combination of The End and Spring Festival was great. Daniela always puts on a good party in Austria, but I would say that this was the best so far.

DJs each have different relationships with different clubs. What do you think has made the relationship special between yourself and The End?
I have never played in a place with such amazing sound. I know everyone always goes on about it, but it’s true. The DJ booth is one of the best, if not the best in the world. The club suits my style, my music, and my interests. It will be hard to see it go!
