SOMA RECORDS PARTY
DAFT PUNK, SLAM, FUNK D’VOID
JANUARY 22, 1997
Dave Clarke: I don’t think The End ’s ever had so many people in there! Daft Punk played in the lounge so it was like a rugby scrum, as they were too big at the time to be that accessible to the public. People like Ewan Pearson and Duran Duran ’s Simon Le Bon were there. I remember seeing Simon grooving away in the corner - he was just about to turn cool again! But really this was a great example of watching something that ’s about to blow up. Daft Punk played that Daft Mix which included records like ‘Funk Phenomena ’ and lots of party music like Prince and Madonna. All in all, one of the best Soma parties ever!
Liam O ’Hare (The End's Operations Manager): Soma ’s birthday party and Daft Punk’s London debut. The buzz on the band was so unbelievable. They were programmed to do a live set in the lounge and we had a thousand people trying to get in. Their style of music, their punk rock attitude, was years ahead of its time. They delivered to the crowd who lapped it up. Fair play to Soma who had the foresight to get them before anyone else.
