DJ Profile
Dave Clarke
Dave Clarke is an artist who has long been held in awe by techno fans around the world, and with a reputation for being standoffish with the media, his enigmatic personality still cuts a rather mysterious and intriguing figure. His DJ career began with gigs at Brighton’s ‘Toppers’ club when he was still a teenager, but his profile really began to rise in the early 90s, with his ‘Red ‘EPs and then his debut album ‘Archive 1’ which combined techno with breaks and electronica. Never a fan of rigidly sticking to one genre, Dave’s sets and albums pulled in influences from hip hop, electro and even eighties nu-wave, raising a few eyebrows amongst the techno purists at the time. His 2001 ‘World Service’ compilation showcased then little known electro acts like Hacker and Fischerspooner before the electroclash scene really took off, and clubbers started painting their hair silver and jumping around in bastardised versions of eighties fashions. He signed to Skint, which in some roundabout way led to him having a race named after him at Hove Dog Track: ‘The Dave Clarke Inaugural Techno Dash’. His 2004 Album ‘Devil’s Advocate’ was brilliantly dark, moody and powerful, and in 2006 he released a collection of remixes and rarities. Still gigging and producing with as much passion as when he first started, Dave Clarke is a true techno pioneer.
