DJ Profile
Toronto’s Jake Fairley, aka Fairmont, was not brought up on a diet of clubbing and electronic music like many of his contemporaries. Having few like-minded friends with which to share his burgeoning interest in electronic sounds, his musical isolation led to an incredibly individual sound in his early productions, and it was that which prompted Jeremy P Caulfield to sign him up after seeing his impressive live show. Jake’s early releases came on Jeremy’s newly founded Dumb Unit imprint, and in the years since his work has taken in many different styles. From his highly personal ‘Paper Stars’ album on Traum drenched in emotion, to the dubbed-out minimal techno of his releases on Sender Records, to the punk-influenced noisy techno of his ‘Touch Not the Cat’ LP, Jake proved himself to be an extremely diverse musician. However, it has been since his 2005 hook-up with James Holden’s awesome Border Community label that his best work has been produced. His first release was ‘Gazebo/Gazelle’, a double-header that embraced his sensitive side, with strong melody, whilst also submitting to his dancefloor tendencies and the result was a huge success in the clubs. In 2007 he released ‘Coloured in Memory’ on Holden’s label, a melancholy album of depth, warmth and of gorgeous melodies. Fairmont continues to astound with his studio work, and with his live show, so take the next opportunity to check him at Border Community’s residency here at The End.
