Biography

Curtis Allen Jones started out studying chemical engineering at the University of Illinois, but half way through his degree he got sucked into the house scene of Chicago and started engineering house music instead. He initially started producing and DJing under the alias Cajmere, first making his mark with tracks like ‘Coffee Pot’, setting up Cajual Records to release vocal, Chigaco-minded house music. He gave himself another alias – Green Velvet – for his non-vocal harder edged productions, and set up Relief records to release these tracks. Records like ‘Preacher Man’ and ‘Answering Machine’ really captured people’s imagination, and the fame of Green Velvet far outstripped that of Cajmere. Green Velvet became a cult figure – known for his highly originally productions and theatrical green hair – truly one of the most innovative producers of his generation.
