First meeting in the mid 90's, Tom and Andy started a club night together called ‘Captain Sensual At The Helm Of The Groove Armada’. By 1997 they had begun releasing their first tracks together, and in the following year released their debut album ‘Northern Star’, a collection of infectious ambient house, big beat, disco and downtempo grooves that set the template for the Groove Armada sound. They followed it up in 1999 with ‘Vertigo’, a classic album containing the hits ‘At The River’, ‘I See You Baby’ and ‘If Everybody Looked The Same’, and it brought Groove Armada mainstream recognition for their work.
In 2001 they released ‘Goodbye Country: Hello Nightclub’ which included the classic track ‘Superstylin’, then in 2002 released their fourth album ‘Lovebox’. In the summer of 2004, they launched their own festival of the same name on Clapham Common. The sell-out event included an all-star main stage line up and has since gone on to become an annual event in the capital, and one of the most eagerly anticipated dates in the summer. Now a two day event, Lovebox incorporates the best music from across the generations, with legendary acts such as Sly & The Family Stone and Blondie lining up alongside the freshest talent of the day, and every year the highlight of the weekend remains the incredible Groove Armada live show.
In 2005 Tom Findlay set up Tunetribe, a music download service set up to specialise in independent music, offering 80% royalties to the labels as opposed to the usual 20%, to support smaller labels and new music. Then in 2007 they released their fifth artist album ‘Soundboy Rock’. Another great record, the album managed to incorporate a stunning level of eclecticism, with every new track leaning towards a different genre, whilst always sounding of-the-moment. It included many live elements, lending itself perfectly to the boys’ famous live show and maintained their status as a big selling dance act with integrity and credibility.
Their clubnight, Lovebox, an off-shoot of the festival, has a long standing friendship with The End. Classic Lovebox nights with the Groove Armada boys litter the last few years here at the club, and 2008 sees them taking up a more permanent residency here at The End.
