Ivan Smagghe is one of the most successful graduates from the Rough Trade school of music, having worked in the shop for years, absorbing every piece of musical wisdom he could get from within its four walls. It was here he met Arnaud, his future partner in Black Strobe. Ivan was soon hosting his own show on his local radio station, giving him the opportunity to inflict his most excellent musical taste on eager listeners, and opening both ears and minds to his leftfield and eclectic sound. He started up his own ‘Kill the DJ’ club night, and things really started escalating from there. Brilliantly bloody minded, he pointedly goes out of his way to not play what people expect, which for many clubbers is where a huge part of his appeal lies. Vive la resistance!
