Biography

German collective Jazzanova formed in 1995, consisting of Alexander Barck, Class Brieler, Roskow Kretschmann, Stefan Leisering, Axel Reinemer and Jurgen von Knoblauch.  Their intention was to create a new, sophisticated electronic sound, fusing jazz with a myriad of other influences to create a dance oriented sound that can work in a club environment.  Their first production ‘Fedime’s Flight’ made a breakthrough with support from Gilles Peterson and led to a remixes for the likes of 4Hero, Koop, Men From The Nile, Truby Trio and Ursula Rucker - pioneering their nu-jazz sound and earning massive critical acclaim and underground credibility in the process.  They teamed up with Michael Reinboth’s superb Compost label, to form Jazzanova Compost Records which as well as being the primary vehicle for Jazzanova’s work.  They released their debut full-length album, ‘In Between’ in 2002, a labour of love that was five years in the making, and the record lived up to expectations, sustaining their reputation as meticulous beatsmiths and composers of sublime soundscapes.  Their reputation has never faltered, whilst their label and crew Sonar Kollektiv, which recently reached its tenth anniversary has become one of electronic music’s best respected collectives, with a membership that includes Ame, Henrik Schwarz, Dixon and Marcus Enochson.  Sonar Kollektiv regularly host rooms here at The End & AKA.
