DJ Profile
Kode9
Dubstep pioneer and founder of the essential Hyperdub label, Kode9 hails from Scotland, beginning his musical journey mixing up hip hop, reggae, jazz, funk and house before being bitten by the jungle bug in ‘93 / ‘94. After migrating to London in 1997 he became taken by the emerging sounds of the UK garage scene. He made his first forays into production after the turn of the millennium, with his first release appearing on the seminal Tempa in 2002. In 2004 he released ‘Sign of the Dub’, the first release on his nascent label Hyperdub which became one of the key components of the Dubstep scene. Hyperdub went on to become a beacon of quality with album releases from Kode9 himself, Spaceape and Burial’s two albums, both of which were literally showered in critical acclaim. Although something of a contrarian, Kode9’s influence on dubstep is immeasurable, and his music, DJ sets and label have been pushing boundaries for years - long may they continue to do so.
