Pepe Deluxe are pretty much how the sixties would sound if they actually happened in the nineties. The core members of this merry band of psychedelic eccentrics are James Spectrum and JA-Jazz, but they have various friends and cohorts who form part of the full line-up. Their debut album ‘Super Sound’ spawned the track ‘Woman in Blue’ which was used on the Levis Twisted advert (although James is still gutted they didn’t get Wonderbra). A self confessed mad professor, James’ search for new ways to make sounds leads him to glue, sellotape, and fuse together various bit of kit in the style of a crazed inventor who locks himself in his shed creating his next big idea. James says the aim of the band is to, “try very hard to sound like no other group in the known universe, to create something that didn’t exist before.” Their lyrics certainly profess to have been written with this is mind, with tracks like ‘Ms Wilhelmina and her Hat’ taking a delightfully surreal turn. A refreshingly quirky and original talent.
