It’s a hard job moving on after you have been one half of one of the most revered musical duos of all time, but if anyone has the talent to do so, it has to be the Hartnoll brothers. From their humble beginnings, putting together ‘Chime’ on their father’s cassette deck, to producing some of the most sublimely beautiful dance music of the last two decades, they finally split in 2004 after several emotional farewell gigs. Phil has now teamed up with Nick Smith – an artist who has released tracks on labels such as Dragonfly and Atomic records and created scores for Ridley Scott – on a project called Long Range. Although distinct from Orbital’s sounds, Phil’s new project still oozes the melancholy euphoria of tracks like ‘Halcyon and On’, and although primarily an electronic project, it incorporates live instruments as well. Orbital fans will not be left disappointed.
