Biography

Ross Allen is a man of many talents, and one of London’s most well known faces on the music scene. Over the years he’s distinguished himself in many fields from DJing to radio presentation, to A&R, to label management to journalism and beyond. Starting as a DJ in the 80s – dropping acid house, hip hop, rare groove and soul – after university he began writing for the jazz and world music bible Straight No Chaser, before getting a job at the independent label Dorado. Eventually persuading them to give him his own sub-label, Filter Records, he created an imprint that straddled genres and released music of the highest quality. After leaving there he went on to become a Sony award winning radio presenter for his eclectic show ‘Destination In’ on London’s GLR, and became Gilles Peterson’s occasional stand-in for his Worldwide show on BBC Radio One. When ‘Destination In’ ended in 2002, he was snapped up by Universal Island, A&Ring and running the Island Blue imprint. His A&R talents have also been called upon by Ninja Tune in the past, and over the years he has signed and worked with Peshay, Tom Middleton, Mercury Award winner Talvin Singh, The Stereo MCs, Lady Sovereign and Sugababes amongst many others. Having DJ’d all over London for many years, chances are you’ve shaken your stuff to a set of his at one time or another, quite possibly here at The End, since from time to time he can be found playing at nights such as DJ Marky & Friends and Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood.
