Biography

Will Saul's career in music started surprisingly reluctantly. When he was growing up, in deepest Somerset, he was encouraged by enthusiastic parents to play the piano, the sax and the timpani (the what?) none of which inspired him. Instead he started buying records before he was even old enough to look over the counter, and whilst most of us were still listening to Kylie & Jason he had built up a respectable collection of Motown, soul, R&B and film scores. When he finally saved up enough pocket money to buy a set of decks, there was no stopping him, and within two years he won Muzik's Bedroom Bedlam competition.

He surrounded himself with music, working for Sony International's A&R department, Koobla Records and the legendary Phonica on Poland Street. His DJing and production style developed to incorporate deep, futuristic, melodic house and techno, with flashes of his early musical influences in touches of soul, Detroit and disco.

His Simple label, set up in 2002, has quickly built up a loyal following and a distinctive sound - melodic yet stripped back, warm yet edgy. As well as himself, the roster of artists includes forward-looking producers such as Mike Monday, Phonique, Mark Romboy and King Roc, as well as new talent like Tam Cooper it's no wonder that the editor of German music magazine De:Bug recently cited Simple as one of his favourite labels.

Will's own productions, such as the hypnotic deep house groove of 'Pause', and his spaced out melodic reworking of 'Content' is (Jesse Rose) 'It's So' have won him high praise from the likes of Ivan Smagghe, Damian Lazarus and Laurent Garnier. He manages to create tracks that sound equally amazing on a soundsystem at 2am as they do in your living room on a Sunday night.

In 2006 Will concentrated on setting up his second imprint Aus Music to release tracks on the more experimental side of house, techno, electro and dub. Now he is firmly back in the studio, with remixes for labels including Freerange, Dessous and Initial Cuts, plus a Simple Sounds compilation celebrating five years of the label.

We thought this one was too good to get away, so we've made Will promise not only to bring a box of lovely tunes to The End's lounge every month, but also to give us the benefit of his impeccable taste in music by bringing a bunch of esteemed guests and fellow label mates along too - including Spirit Catcher, Ewan Pearson and Jesse Rose. Catch Will and his Simple friends on the first Saturday of every month in The End's lounge.
