Biography

CJ Mackintosh has been a key player on the house scene for over two decades. He first stepped behind the decks aged 15, setting up a soundsystem with his brother and playing house parties around London – mixing up early hip-hop, house, jazz, funk, soul and disco. His talents came to the attention of the dance music community in 1987 when he won the UK title in the DMC Mix Championship.

Shortly after CJ Mackintosh joined a pioneering new band – Nasty Rox – which at the time was one of the few acts to be combining elements of rock and dance. Although Nasty Rox built up a cult following, it was a one-off collaboration with 3 other artists that shot him to the top of the charts – and M/A/R/R/S ‘Pump up the Volume’ was born. Still frequently slipped into DJ sets today as cheeky nod to the past, he had played a part in creating a classic. High profile remix work poured in, from Coldcut and C&C Music Factory to De La Soul and Inner City. These days, as well as continuing his production work, his DJing takes him all around the world – always returning to The End every other month to play proper house music to a faithful crowd.
