Biography

Sven Vath is truly the last of the rock n roll DJ's, and we love him all the more for it. He has been called "the only German pop-star" by the press (David Hasslehoff step aside) and is an absolute legend, both for his mind blowing DJ sets and his unique productions.

He began his DJing career at the seminal Dorian Gray and Vogue clubs in Germany when he was just a teenager, where even during his early sets he was moving away from the mainstream and embracing the underground. At the end of the 80's Sven Vath bought the Vogue club and transformed it into the venerable Omen - where he pushed his unique, constantly evolving sound for a decade, turning the Omen into the hub of underground music not just for Germany but for the whole of Europe.

Founder of Harthouse Records, the now defunct Eye Q and currently Cocoon Recordings, Sven Vath has also produced some of the most influential electronic records of the last twenty years - from the driving techno of Fusion to the sublime abstract electronica of 'The Harlequin: the Robot and the Ballet Dancer'.

His Cocoon club night - which represents "metamorphosis, development, new birth and surprises", began in Germany in 1998 but has now grown to be an international clubbing brand, with regular appearances at select venues around the world, including The End as its London home. He has somehow managed to combine being an underground party warlord with a national hero - and was even personally invited to come back to his home town of Obertshausen to set up a yearly outdoor festival at a location of his choosing!

Sven Vath's reputation for being a hedonist is not unfounded, and although he has calmed down (a bit) - today's squeaky clean early-to-bed-early-to-rise DJ's could learn a lot from the techno-lord: ripping off his shirt, diving into the crowd or plugging his headphones into the microphone for a bit of 'ad-libbing' over tracks are not unusual. Gude Laune!
